If you have landed on this page looking for options to soothe your baby’s aching gums, let me tell you I am with you. I know that teething is a trying phase and no matter how much you try to soothe your baby, the aching gums will lead to those unexpected bouts of loud cries when in pain. There are some teethers that you can get in the paediatric shops that promise to soothe the tender gums. However, I personally believe that these could also be a reason for various stomach infections that a child is prone to during the teething phase. Ask me how? Well, when there is saliva on the teether and it falls on the ground or the table, chances are it could attract bacteria and germs which could make your little one’s gut sick, if she puts it in her mouth again. If you are still looking for a teether to buy, here are the options.
To curb this problem, I have started to make my own teethers. It is easy, cost effective and is gentle on your baby’s gums.
How to do it:
- Get few handkerchiefs, wash and sundry them.
- Tie knots at one end of the handkerchief. Not too many, just two or three knots to make a ball out of it. Keep the other end free.
- Refrigerate these handkerchiefs and give your baby one, when she is in pain, to chew on the knotted balls.
- Once she has soothed her gums enough, put the cloth to wash.
- Remember it could seem like a cumbersome task to keep washing the clothes. But these are small ones which you can hand wash with baby detergent at your sink.
Things to keep in mind during teething:
- Don’t offer your child a feed while she is in pain. You might end up in pain if she bites you while nursing.
- Avoid giving gripe water or any other pain management medication during teething. Her little gut will not get accustomed to it.
- Try massaging her gums with your finger lightly to help her feel better.
